Medicare Made Simple

Medicare

New to Medicare or helping a loved one navigate it for the first time? This guide breaks down everything you need to know — in plain language, with no jargon.

The Basics

What Is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, as well as certain younger people with disabilities or specific conditions. It's divided into different "parts," each covering different types of care.

Understanding how the parts work together — and when to enroll — can save you thousands of dollars and prevent costly penalties. That's where Kim comes in.

Important: Missing your enrollment window can result in permanent late penalties added to your monthly premium. Kim helps you enroll at the right time — the first time.

Breaking It Down

The Four Parts of Medicare

Each part covers something different. Here's what you need to know about A, B, C, and D.

A

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.

  • Most people get Part A premium-free if they or their spouse worked 10+ years
  • Covers inpatient hospital stays after a deductible
  • Skilled nursing facility care (after a 3-day hospital stay)
  • Hospice care for terminal illness
  • Limited home health care services
B

Part B

Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medically necessary services.

  • Standard monthly premium (income-based adjustments may apply)
  • Doctor visits and specialist care
  • Outpatient hospital services
  • Preventive screenings and vaccines
  • Durable medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.)
  • Mental health services
C

Part C

Medicare Advantage

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurers and often including extra benefits.

  • Combines Part A + Part B coverage in one plan
  • Often includes Part D (prescription drugs)
  • May include dental, vision, and hearing benefits
  • Usually requires using a network of providers
  • Plans vary by location — Kim can compare options for you
  • Must still pay your Part B premium
D

Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover the cost of prescription medications through private insurance plans approved by Medicare.

  • Sold by private insurance companies
  • Each plan has a formulary (list of covered drugs)
  • Monthly premiums vary by plan and medications
  • Late enrollment penalty if you don't sign up when first eligible
  • Can be added to Original Medicare or included in Medicare Advantage
  • Annual coverage gap ("donut hole") may apply
